Arulmighu alagirinatha swamy temple, kottai in salem is an ancient temple. It is believed to be have had 5 praharams including the present collector’s office. It was called as sri sundararaja perumal temple. As proof for this, we can find a pillar with mandapam bearing Krishna image is there.
Due to foreign and mohammedian invasion,the temple reached its current state . it is surrounded by compound walls on four sides and its location is just west to the river bank of manimutharu river, the area of the temple is about one acre of land.
When and who’s period the temple came to existence is not known.we can came to know that the temple was first renovated by the nayakar’s regime. The monuments and inscriptions inside the temple walls shows that the temple was renovated by the nayakars.
The temple is situated in the heart of the town. We can reached the temple through bus and trains very easily. It is 3 kms from south – east to the new bus stand. And 8 kms from south – east fo the railway junction.
The temple has a big legend of history.in the purana time , one birugu munivar was very powerful in vaikuntam. By meditation and pious worship he got tremendous power. He dared to step on the chest of mahavishnu as the almight was in the bed of sainam. The lord was very calm. But goddess mahalakshmi got annoyed about the attitude of the birugu munivar.

Tiruchengode (also known as “Thirukodi mada chengundroor ” in vedic times) has many references in puranas, like Thevaram and Silapathikaram. In Silapathikaram, Ilango adigal referred Tiruchengode as “Chengodu ” and that “it has numerous holy ponds and enjoys popularity and prosperity”.
This temple has been praised by the Nayanmar Thirugnanasambandhar in his devotional hyman Devaram. Great poets and saints like Arunagirinathar, Ilango adigal, Kaviraja pandithar amongst others have enlogised this holy place in their divine poems. The idols of Birungi Munivar and Arunagirinathar are found inside the temple.
This ancient hill temple according to the inscriptions on the walls must have been built about 2000 years ago. Many renovation works and additions were done by the kings and chieftains ruled over Tamilnadu in the past.
The town has a hill, which is about 650 ft. height . The hill is referred in many names like Chemmalai, Nagamalai, Nandhimalai and many more.
Lord Arthanareeswarar is giving salvation to all souls, from the hill top temple. Lord Sengottuvelavar and Lord Adhikesava Perumal in separate shrines as presiding deities.
Lord Arthanareeswarar has a unique form here, which combines half male and half female form. The lord is also known as Madhorubagan and Ammayappan. It is claimed that this rare posture of the Lord as prime deity can be found only in this temple in the whole of Asia. The hill top temple can be reached by climbing up 1206 steps, made of stone.

Mecheri is one of the divine places and celebrated one, Where the omni potent goddess in the form of “Vada Bhadrakeli” is showering her blessings on the being in the universe. In the west of salem which is noted for sweetmango which stands first in “tri-fruit” i.e., mango,jack-fruit and banana, Mecheri is situated on the high-way of salem-mettur Dam .
Mecheri is 33 km away from salem and 20km away from mettur dam which is for cauvery river. Mecheri is surrounded by the lake and beatiful green meadows.It is also surrounded by south vallattu nadu and thoppaiyam.
Mechari which is famous for “Mecheri special sheep” is the holy place for ambigal Bhadrakali who showers her blessing on the whole universe. The temple facing north/ is situated in south -east direction in the heart of mechari town nearby Salem- Dharmapuri highway
There are wide corrifors and mandapams surrounding the temple.Rajagopuram is main entrance to the temple.Besides this,there are three rajagopurams in three directions.

The Structure and Greatness of the Place
Thirugnana Sambandar has sung in praise of God as ‘Oongu Pugazh Kollikaadare’ (Great fame in Devaram. A Chola King with heavy sani dhosam finally got relief from his sufferings on worshipping the Sani Bhagavan, Agneeswarar and Mirudupaadanayagi at Kollikadu. Sthala Viriksha (Holy tree of the temple) is Vannimaram. Theerthakulam (the sacred pond) lies on the northern side of the temple. It is called Agnitheertham.
On Passing through the entrance at the temple, the bali peeta and nandhi sannadhis(shrines)In the main pragaram for Murugan with Valli and Deivanai. Lord Muruga is seen with bow and arrow instead of his vel. It is also considered as the unique feature of the temple and that could be seen nowhere else. There are separate shrines for Mahalakshmi and sani baghvan. Separate shrine for Bhiravar and Navagraham are also situated opposite to pongusaneeswarar.
Here the Navagraham have been same tamed as to prevent them from wielding there evil influence hence the name ‘koli’ meaning that the plants are powerless. So unlike in other temples the navagraham are positioned differently here in an open formation facing each other. It is also peculiar and special feature of the temple. In niches on the outer wall are idols of Vinayagar, Dhakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgadevi.
The shrine for Sani bhagavan is in the South West corner. The Idol seen with kalappai or plough(right) and crow (left) in his upper two arms, Left hand by his side has Ooru Hastam and the right hand as abaya hastam (Arumugamurthy).

Chenna Kesava Perumal temple, located at Devaraja Mudali Street in Sowcarpet area of Chennai city, India, is one of the few tempels built with the aid from the British East India Company. Chenna Kesava Perumal temple is very old. The original Chenna Kesava temple was located even in the 17th century AD in the location where the Madras High Court is currently located.
The British East India Company demolished this temple in 1757 AD. Due to public outcry, they donated land and some money to Manali Muttukrishna Mudaliar, who built the new Chenna Kesava Perumal temple in the year of 1762. Along with this Vishnu temple, he also built a temple for Shiva – Chenna Malleeswarar temple, thus Chennai got twin temples. There is a theory that the city Chennai was named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal temple. When the original temple was present, there were a lot of problems in Chennai such as invasion by French and Tipu Sultan. The priests of the temple took the idols of Chenna Kesava to Tiruneermalai temple near Chennai.
